[edit intro]

This is a draft recommendation on how to romanize Modern Greek words and names within Citizendium. It is not official Citizendium policy. You may edit this as you would any other page within this site. Discussion of the issues should take place on the Talk page.

Multiple transliteration systems exist, in particular coping with different European languages and their interpretation of the transliteration. In English, two systems tend to prevail at this time: the 19th century English conventions referring to classical Greece (see Ancient Greek); and a contemporary system developed for legal transliteration of Greek names for passports and usage on the Schengen Information System (computerised records). Therefore, names in modern Greek should follow the official transliteration code agreed between Greece and the EU.
