I was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1930 and went through the public schools in Cleveland Heights, graduating from Cleveland Heights High School in 1949. I went on to Duke University, where I earned two degrees - a B. A. (political science/English) in 1953 and a J. D. in 1955. I served as Editor-in-Chief of the Duke Bar Journal (now the Duke Law Journal) during my third in law school.

I practiced law in private practice in Columbus, Ohio from 1955 through 1999; then served as in-house-counsel for a Cleveland corporation for five years. Since 2004 I have practiced only sporadically, serving a few long-time clients.

I served as President of the Columbus Bar Association (1976-77); as President of the Ohio State Bar Association (1983-84); and as a member of the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association (1984-95), as well as serving in a number of other capacities for various law-related organizations. I served as Chairman of the Board of Editors of Ohio Lawyer (1986-91) and have written a number of law-related articles.

My chief non-legal interests are history (with particular emphasis on the American Civil War) and literature. I am a voracious and eclectic reader and periodically submit essays and short stories in writing competitions. I find myself constantly referring to various reference works, including Wikipedia. I like the idea of Citizendium - a potential source of accurate information about a universe of subjects.
