My name is Marjan Addink, I am a Dutch biologist who has become specialized in dolphins and whales (cetaceans). I have together with veterinarians and colleges spend a lot of time dissecting animals that washed ashore on the Dutch coast. Most animals that do wash ashore in this area are harbour porpoises and those are studied. We do get other species like white beaked dolphins as well, a few a year. My own interests are rather wide (as long as they concern dolphins) but one of the points I focus on is reproduction and the possible negative influence that pollutants may have on this process. More as a hobby, I am sometimes involved in fieldwork on dolphins (Red Sea area among others). Within professional organizations that have dolphin scientists as members I try to get interest started in cetacean research that does take place in the arts and the social sciences as I personally find that we focus too much on just cetacean research in the natural sciences.
