It is sort of a legal matter :) It would be really beneficial if you could "mention" one of the licenses: GPL or Creative Commons. Judging from your response, I would suggest you to use Creative Commons Attribution license, which requires that the source of this image should always be mentioned. GPL is not considered good for media as it requires a load of documentation to present with every image.
