I originally trained as a lawyer but finding that uncongenial changed course in 1973 to read Chinese. I have lived in China for a total of about 12 years, of which one was spent on advanced Chinese courses at Liaoning University and two and a half were at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where I studied the 7-string zither, guqin.

I now earn my living translating from Modern Standard Chinese (Putonghua) into British English and am based in the North of England.
